Hello everyone, meet my new rug. Found it on an off chance at a local charity shop for only 2 pounds! It has fun rainbow colours and a cool geometric pattern in the centre. It did need a little airing and it has a few patches that appear to be balding but it's worth it!

I spent all afternoon sitting on the rug and reading Tim Walker's Pictures. It was warm enough not to have to wear tights and I took full advantage of this fact, it felt like spring was here. Alas, spring is still some time away, but I do look forward to bare legs and flowy dresses, and not having to wear a massive coat over every outfit.

Feeling rather mischievous today. Maybe it was the cats on my shorts or I was just in a curious mood but I climbed up onto bits of the roof that aren't meant to be climbed on and played on a ladder that someone left propped up in a corner.

I found this blazer over the summer, it's vintage Sonia Rykiel, finding vintage designer clothing is a rare occasion for me! As you may have guessed, my other favourite pastime, apart from climbing roofs, is mixing patterns. All the green-grey tones were very comforting today. Also, it wasn't all that cold without tights, which shouldn't happen, not in February at least.

Wearing: Urban Outfitters shorts and everything else is thrifted.

Helplessness Blues

I only went out to buy bread from the local shop and yet managed to get an incredible quantity of stares, not to mention the guy who called me Harley Quinn (has he ever seen Harley Quinn?) Not a bother, they were giving out free lindor so that made up for it substantially.

Somehow I decided that lots of pink with this dress was the best idea ever, when I got this morning. After some contemplation I decided it was too pink and girly so, to add an ironic twist, I threw on my new denim shirt and my trusty skull necklace. I cannot truly express my love for this denim shirt, I've been wearing it almost every day since I thrifted it.

Wearing: thrifted dress, denim shirt, pink silk shirt, belt, antique necklace, Urban Outfitters shoes, and the tights were a gift.

As per request, here are some additional photos of my oh-so interesting life. I made scones and cucumber sandwiches for my boyfriend's birthday. It all made for an excellent afternoon tea served with afternoon Darjeeling, raspberry jam and Cornish clotted cream. Bonus fact: the cake stand doubles as my jewelry stand when we're not trying to behave like civilized citizens rather than students.

It snowed in London! It's been the topic of all conversations all day and I would say it's getting old but I never get bored of snow. I might change my mind if it were a permanent fixture for half the year (I'm sorry for those of you that have to endure this sort of weather on a far more regular basis, having cold wet feet does get tiresome after some time).

On Friday I had a very successful trip to oxfam, one of the items I found was this hat (for only a pound!), as well as some curtains which I'll be adjusting and posting a tutorial of, if they turn out any good. Somehow I ended up in a lion-tamer-band-leader sort of mood, hence the resurrection of the military jacket from the depths of my wardrobe. I'm glad I've kept hold of it, it's still a copious amount of fun to wear.

I'm going to try and include photos of my day in my posts, of things that aren't just my face, I'm starting to feel ~~a little~~ very narcissistic. Don't get me wrong, I love posting outfit photos, just maybe with a few other photos thrown in there for good measure. What do you think?

Hold me dear into the night

At last, some decent photos. The sun has returned to London, although it is now much colder which means my half hour walk to lectures is the weather's newest form of extreme torture. On the other hand, the sunshine is a welcome change to the constant dreary cloud and bitter rain.

More roof photos but I like these so much better than the last ones, I chose a better time to catch the light. Not to mention, my seemingly never ending search for the perfect white jumper may finally be over! I found this 80's fisherman jumper at a charity shop on Tuesday. The 80's produced some decent clothing after all, who knew? I also thrifted this pleather jacket the same day, my first "leather" jacket, I've always wanted one and red is the perfect colour. Paired with some awesome new shoes, I felt like this was an outfit for going to kick some butt. Although I think this is also partly due to the rather vampy lipstick which is my new favourite accessory.

C'mon will you dance, my darling?

I'm back, or so one could say. Since my last post I've had a week of exams, which went terribly if you really want to know. I've started a new term of university, which is as eventful as ever (not). Not least of all, I've moved into a new flat; it's the top floor of a lovely brick building with a fantastic view. Also, it has a massive roof that I sneak out onto to take photos.

Other exciting news: I have my first sponsor! Oasap, an online clothing retailer, up and coming but already showing massive potential. I mean, look at this skirt, an adorable petticoat for a decent price, how could I resist?

After my last few posts I've decided no more whiny blogger. This is my style blog with occasional sewing posts and I might create a DIY blog later specifically for tutorials, if I feel so inclined (and I have the time).

We are but mayflies caught on the breeze, lit by a fading sun

New year, new hair, as the saying goes. When I discovered half a packet of pink hair dye at home I couldn't resist recreating my dip dye, it's longer than last time but still not as long as I'd like it. It was a fantastically beautiful day today, clear skies that lasted until the afternoon so that I could capture a wonderful sunset. Here the sunsets are better in winter because in Summer the sun sets behind the mountains so it isn't possible to get the low angle, but in the winter it sets over some hills to the south, much better for photos. I'm quite annoyed by the saturation in these photos, only the communal computer has photoshop but there is something terribly wrong with the calibration and I can't fix it. I'll probably save all the editing until I get back to London before uploading them to flickr.

I've been obsessed with monochromatic outfits lately. I say lately, this is the second one. However, with my bright hair I couldn't help but to add a pop of matching colour in my socks. I realized later that with the polka dotted shirt and the pink hair I'd been unintentionally channeling my inner Charlotte Free.

Wait all year for the parting shot

I feel I've been a good blogger this holiday, three posts since I got home! This is my New Year's Eve outfit, to wear around the house while eating too many snacks and watching Great Expectations and Sherlock Holmes (the BBC version, naturally). Thinking of giving the blog a bit of a revamp for the new year, nothing drastic though. It snowed again a couple of days ago and I threw myself at it, which resulted in rather numb fingers and toes.

I feel like in this outfit I'm channeling my inner Russian-doll-tomboy-princess. The stuff all over my tights is some horrible plant that got stuck all over me while I wandered through some bushes.

Merry (belated) Christmas everyone!
'Tis the season to get away with wearing too much red. I take this on as a personal challenge. Red and green all the time! I've been meaning to post an outfit with this collar since October, I'm such a procrastinator. I won it from a giveaway over on Molly Made, it satisfies my need to wear collars all the time without wearing a shirt, also, isn't adorable?

I'm wearing: thrifted dress and sunglasses, old jumper, tights, shoes and socks, and collar by Molly-Made.

I've had a wonderful Christmas. I love helping with baking and decorating Christmas treats and sweets, like this gingerbread house we made. I designed and decorated most of it.

I also got some lovely presents, including several pairs of colourful tights (I love tights) and a new lens (my new baby!). I hope your Christmas festivities were fun. What's your favourite Christmas tradition? What was your favourite present?

The day fades away

After a hectic last week at school I'm back with my family for the holidays. Ah, fields to roam, forest to wander through, it's all part of the fun of being in the country. Also, thrifting fun. I only brought a 3 tops and 2 bottoms home so there won't be too many outfit posts (unless I find something at the local charity shop...)
I do believe I've never posted this coat, which is shocking because it's the most wonderful coat I've found in a charity shop. I'm frequently told that I look like someone's great aunt's armchair/curtains. Wearing makeup for the first time in forever, mascara is irritating because it never comes off! (Or am I doing something terribly wrong?)
Wearing: thrifted silk shirt and jacket and an old skirt I found at home.
The last photo is some horses in a field, as the fog began to rise up, the sunlight was illuminating the entire landscape and it was beautiful.

I found this jumper in the children's section of the charity shop, they had four of them and I nearly bought every one (I would have if my boyfriend hadn't stopped me). It's from a school in Chelsea with the most adorable school uniform (mustard and burgundy) and the jumper sells for about $70 new! I bought myself there tights as a mini birthday gift to myself.

Trying not to get back into old habits of not posting often. School is just so overwhelming. I have been working on a new sewing project though. I don't want to rush it, but it'll be useful in the cooler weather.

The top outfit was my entry into a lacoste contest on lookbook.nu. It also happens to be an outfit I wear a lot. I love the skirt, it's got such great colours. The one below, I have Daria boots (for stomping), my sunshine yellow dress (for cloudy days) and my boyfriend's backpack (so much better than a shoulder bag).

Ah! University is eating me alive, and spitting out the bones for the internet to chew on. No time left for outfit photos! Although I'll make an effort this week because my schedule has a little extra time built into it. Though I may use all my free time sewing, I've got ideas, and a pot of fabric paint, that I really want to use.

Autumn has come to my hometown

I went to a vintage jumble sale on Sunday, at the East End Thrift Store. My boyfriend and I filled a big bag for 20 pounds. One thing I found was this jumper, I was drawn to the colour but decided it was too big. It fits my boyfriend, and I said he could have it, but I love it too much. Mine now.

Darn, all the photos I upload seem to be so much less saturated and far more washed out when I post them online. I really need to get the photoshop on my family's computer figured out. I left my laptop in London so I could carry more stuff, and now I have to live with sharing someone else's computer. Sucks, just a little bit. I would love a macbook, I got to use a pro when I went away to an adobe training event from school, alas those times have passed.

Okay, so the shorts. I spent 2 days painting these horses onto pattern pieces I'd cut out and only 2 hours sewing it all together. Somehow the horses on the front aligned perfectly. My other favourite horse is the one with three legs in photo three. Used a burda magazine pattern with a few adjustments and an old sheet. Simple and easy.

It's been a long time since I've seen you smile

Just a few quick photos from today, I've got another sewing project on the way, just finished with the pattern, now the simple task of assembling the bits. I love this playsuit I bought it on sale when I first got to uni in London. It's really not a good thing, my uni is a 10 minute walk from the nearest UO which means I have the tendency to browse it during lunch break.

I managed to catch a grasshopper in my hat while I was wearing it, and when I was leaving, a slug was attached to my tripod. It grossed me out but I didn't want to hurt it in my attempts to remove it.

Also, I look freakishly pale, I only noticed today how I could see every last vein through my skin. I have pale ghost skin. Not sure if you can see in the first photo but the only part of me that tans is my upper arms. Really? What? I once got an awkward tan wearing this playsuit and thigh high socks, that was a bad moment.

Anyway, I'll be taking a few photos of the things I would sell in my etsy shop soon, just as a bit of a preview so that I can get your opinions on it all. You are all so lovely!

Took out my yukata today, for playing in a new field I found, the old one was mowed. The old field that is, not the yukata. I went thrifting and then watched some fireworks in the evening.

I was thinking of opening an etsy shop, I've got a tonne of vintage clothes, some of which I don't wear all too often and it's a share keeping them all in my wardrobe. Any thoughts on this idea?

Two outfit posts in two days? Unheard of! I'll probably end up not posting for several days after this, but that's just the way I roll, irregularly. I went out to go take pictures by the lake but there were so many people, I felt nervous walking past them so I couldn't take photos with them around. Instead I found a secluded patch of forest and a beautiful field, hidden from view.

The dress is a lovely soft dark blue jersey that I got in a scraps bin in a fabric shop on Portobello road. It has gold buttons with anchors on them, I got those at the local farmers market.

Just another diamond day

Alternate title: The 60's called, they want their stuff back.

When I shoot indoors it's usually rubbish and because I left it too late to go outside. Today the weather was rubbish so I tried indoors again, and I had a concept idea, the 60's (how vague can you get?) It turned out quite well, it was fun, and the photos turned out quite fun (I think so anyway). The vinyls are some signed 7" EP's and singles that I won in a contest a few years ago. The typewriter I got at a charity shop for a few pounds, I love the colour and it types perfectly. I love the reaction photo, the glasses are my real glasses, and yes, I do wear them because I really am quite short sighted.

Title is a Vashti Bunyan song, go listen to her, she's lovely. Especially her stuff from the 60's (see the connection? Yeah, I'm so clever).

The dream of love is a two hearted dream

Someone didn't want me to take photos today. Dinner was late so I missed the last of the sunlight, even as I cycled out the sun had set. The best photo was out of focus. My camera ran out of battery half way through. They're all really just my fault, but tomorrow is another day and I can get more photos then. Also, these photos seem to be far less saturated on blogger than in photoshop, I should really fix the colour profile. I also scouted a bunch of new photo locations in the area, including a trashed caravan, I've got the perfect shoot in mind, I just have to execute it.

In other news, I made a simple summery tank top. Scalloped hem and collar just because I like them. It's the same fabric I used for my peter pan collar dress, and another old sheet used for white scraps.

Handmade top; old shorts from the back of my wardrobe; asos socks and thrifted shoes that you can't see in the photos. Pity, they're quite lovely.

The long road begins and ends with you

So I finally dragged my lazy butt out of the house to get photos of the sunflowers! They were all facing the wrong way so I was shooting from within the field. It was very lovely there, a good spot for reading a book. I also found something that made the whole walk worth it, but I'm keeping that a secret until I can get decent photos, but first I have to find some bleach!

My mum bought me this dress at a charity shop, she was buying furniture and I got this from their clothing section. I saw someone leave with the most adorable dress that I wish I'd found. Can't have everything I guess.

I've loaded my mum's old agfa clack with some nice new film and I'm hoping I can get some nice photos of life in France. So far I've managed to double expose two of three photos, just because I have skills.

The poppies are all grown knee deep by now

I'm wearing: handmade top, skirt and headband; thifted roller skates; old black converse

I’ve been working on this dress that is not a dress for a few days now, it's inspired by poppies that grey in massive wild fields around where I live. The top is a corset style top made with cotton under a layer of red lace. The skirt is chiffon layered over dress lining. I made the pieces separate so that I could wear them apart as well as together, I sometimes wish I could take the top or skirt of a dress and wear it alone so problem solved! The headband is flowers made from left over cotton.

I also wore my new roller skates, I got them at a charity shop that I visited on the weekend, I bought a typewriter for £5 and the skates were free with it! Also, they were red and matched this outfit so well, I just had to wear them. After the shoot I rode them down the biggest hill around, on a lovely smooth path, what fun!

Peach, plum, pear

I went out today with intentions of shooting in the light of the setting sun, somewhat achieve although it had passed behind a rain cloud by the time I got outside because my father rearranged my room while I was gone and I had to search the house for my tripod. I walked through a lot of tall grass to take these, and I swear I saw a leach! I also stepped on an anthill but ran before the ants attacked.

These photos show my dip dye quite well, even if it has faded to an odd salmon-orange colour by now, pity, I'll have to renew the colour soon.

New dress! I made it shortly after my exams finished but didn't get around to photographing it until last night. I didn't have a zip so I used two buttons for the closure. It's wonderful for running around in, I spent most of the evening prancing up and down the garden! Also, for your pleasure, my friend's cat, she had such a perfectly grumpy expression when I woke her by accident.

I almost forgot to mention the hair! Yes, I dip-dyed my hair pink and I love it. I'll try and get better photos of it when it's down as well as posting the inspiration, perhaps you too will be inspired to choose unnatural hair colours this summer.

The floral wreath is handmade, the socks from asos and the shoes were a gift from my mother.

Tutorial: Floral headband/wreath

I meant to post this quite a while ago, had I not left my laptop behind over the holidays I would have had it done much sooner. Alas, there is nothing to be gained thinking of what could have been. This project was sparked into existence when I stumbled upon the loveliest little flowers in a small haberdashery in Staines. I'd gone with the student newspaper team for a trip the the nearest amusement park, spending most of the day on the teacups with a good friend of mine. We left a little early and took the shuttle back to the train station, and were it not for my stupidity and our getting off at the wrong stop we would have never found this treasure. Little mistakes are sometimes magical.

Ah, back to the tutorial!
The only materials needed are flowers, as the flowers I used have long wire stems. If you are using flowers without stems (pound shops are good for finding cheap plastic flowers), find some low gauge wire which you could cover in green ribbon once the headband is done or paint green if that suits you better. Alternately, the flowers could be attached to an existing headband, if you wish to take the easiest route.

Step 1
Measure the circumference of your head at the point at which you would like the headband to sit, allow a little room, the flowers are light and the headband should generally cling to your hair rather than needing to fit too snugly. Lay out this measurement on a flat surface and arrange the flowers so that they are equally spaced along it.

Step 2
Twist the wires of the flowers together to join them. Make sure to tuck in the ends tightly so that they do not snag on your hair as you put the headband on and off.

Step 3
Feel free to add some twirls and swirls or leave or flourishes of any other kind, to make your headband even more unique.

Voilà, it is done!
Now go dance and prance, like the faeries that come out at night and scatter their magic among the roots of the ancient trees of the forest.

I know I said I wouldn't keep posting all the time, but I did something of merit today. I actually went out and took photos of my dress! Yes, my lovely dress, the one I made at the start of the summer, decided I didn't like it, took it apart and re-made it. I think it still needs a little lace along the bottom, but otherwise it's all done! :)

It's just a floral cotton dress, lined with linen and it has lace around the neckline, for a nice touch.

It was rather cool and windy today, the sun was warm but the wind make me quite cold, hence the tights and cardigan.

I got some fairy lights for my room, because fairy lights make everything look better (FACT). And then I decided glitter would be a good idea too. Not quite sure about that, but I do like glitter.

So, FINALLY I got pictures of my playsuit! Lets all celebrate this occasion, which I have been putting off for ages... actually, just enjoy the photos :)

The weather here is still so lovely, I feel reluctant to put on autumn clothes (and besides, when it's in 28 degrees plus, that's not really an option). Although I wouldn't mind this playsuit with some over-the-knee socks and brogues.

The playsuit is made from a lovely polkadot cotton I got on holiday in Slovakia in April. It's lined with linen, to give it structure and so it's not as see-through. It closes with a zipper and several snaps. The shorts are based on a burda magazine pattern, but I made them high waisted instead.

Uneventful Monday. Woke up late, skipped breakfast, hula hooped and went for a short walk to the town hall.

I meant to go take some nice photos and I put it off until it got horribly dark, too late for the lovely evening sun. I'm afraid these don't qualify for posting anywhere but here, as slightly artsy stuff.

I also need a new pose that's not lying on the ground. Do you have a pose you overuse in photos?

This morning I went to a market, they had a few fruit stalls and some clothing stalls. I found a stand with wonderful boater and panama hats. I didn't get the boater hat, though I really must! I did however manage to pick up a new handbag. I've managed to break two this summer, so a new bag to carry all my needs, including lots of camera gear. Do you visit markets? What sort? I'd love to know about your wonderful market finds! :)

Panel skirt tutorial

So I had someone ask me if I'd used a pattern for the skirt I made, I didn't but I decided to make a mini tutorial explaining the process I went through to create it. This tutorial doesn't go into too much detail and it assumes that you already have basic sewing knowledge, for example sewing in a zip or sewing a hem. If you need help with things like that there are heaps of videos on youtube, and on threadbanger to help.

Sorry for the lack of posts, I've been on holiday and then busy moving into a house in the South of France, I'll be here for a few months before I head off to University.

I may post a few pictures of my Spanish holiday later, but for now here's a skirt and a top I made.

I had a scrap piece of mellow yellow fabric, so I used that and a scrap of lace to make a simple skirt

My first sewing machine project: Annette, the light summer dress

So last week I got my Threadbanger sewing machine!
As a first project I decided to use a Burda magazine pattern, and I used an old duvet cover so as not to destroy any good fabric. The duvet cover is actually quite lovely, it's an off-white and has small, pale white dots all over it. You can only see them if you look closely. Instead of a zipper closure I used the snaps that were on the bottom of the duvet cover. It has two tiers and a lined top with straps at meet at the back.
